Turkey offers several categories. The one that fits depends on how long you have been in the country and how you intend to work.
The most common permit for employees. It is usually granted for one year and is tied to a specific employer and job, so you can work for that employer in that role. As long as the conditions stay the same, it can be renewed, generally for two years and then three-year periods.
If you have lived and worked legally in Turkey for at least eight years, or hold a long-term residence permit, you may qualify for an unlimited work permit. It gives you far more freedom, letting you work in different roles or companies without being tied to one employer.
For those who plan to work for themselves, such as freelancers or business owners. It allows self-employment where you meet the criteria on your business activity and financial sustainability. If you are setting up a business, we can also help with company formation.
The steps depend on whether you apply from outside Turkey or from within the country.
If you are outside Turkey, you begin at a Turkish consulate or embassy in your home country or country of residence. Your documents are forwarded to the Ministry of Labor and Social Security. Once the application is approved you can collect a work visa, enter Turkey and start working.
If you already hold a valid residence permit (generally valid for at least six months), you can apply from inside Turkey. In most cases your employer submits the necessary documents on your behalf. Because incomplete paperwork causes delays or rejection, it helps to have your file checked before it is lodged.
A real advantage of the Turkish work permit is that it doubles as a residence permit. Once it is issued you can reside in Turkey legally without a separate residence document, for as long as the permit is valid.
The flip side is that your right to stay is tied to the permit. If it expires, your residence status ends too. If you plan to remain in Turkey, renew the permit on time or apply for a suitable residence permit before it lapses. Overstaying can bring fines and, in some cases, a removal decision. Students who want to work while studying must obtain a work permit. Part-time work is generally allowed, though certain restrictions apply depending on your program and stage of study.
Marriage to a Turkish citizen does not by itself give you the right to work. You still need a work permit, although your family ties can support other status options. We can also advise on the family law side and, in time, Turkish citizenship.
